FEEL / VIBE - Vocals Have To Have Feel

The producers that I work with and hang with use two words a lot: feel/vibe. What they're trying to say is that when your vocal is being recorded, it has to have feel, it has to have communication, and you have to be in an emotional state. It has to have a vibe that makes the producer want to listen to you. One suggestion to achieve feel, is to sing a lot (just as instrumentalists play a lot to get feel).(Reference my blog ‘Want To Be A Celebrity’, www.bradchapmanvocals.com, then go to Blog.)
Can Feel/Vibe Be Taught?:
Some people think feel can’t be taught, but it can. A person just needs to be worked with on the lyrics, especially if they wrote the song. When a song writer sings their own lyrics, that’s when it’s really great because they actually feel what they're singing. This is because the song writer does not have to interpret the lyrics. They’re not thinking about singing anymore. They’re thinking about all the emotions that the story’s words of their song bring up in them. This is feel, vibe, emotional expression etc.
What the Producer and the Audience Need from You:
Virtually every producer you work with will ask you for feel/vibe. So, I’m suggesting strongly that you feel your lyrics, melody and music as deeply as possible. You must feel the emotion before your voice starts to sing. It is the emotion that drives your voice, drives your pitch, and drives your expressions (facial and vocal). Without it (some producers won't tell you this, some will), the recording has no value and your live performance would have no value either. You might get polite applause, but if you're not really expressing emotions and communicating with people, they’re not coming back for your next show (or buying your records). Again, look at your story’s lyrics and feel what they have to offer. Feel it inside and then sing it out. Don’t forget my mantra for this is: ‘Sing from Feel’.
Mastering Feel Brings Success:
Once you have mastered bringing feel to your songs, the new reactions from your audience will be far superior, such as: crying, smiling, dancing or …riveting all of their attention on you (and yelling for more).
(When Anita Baker recorded the album The Songstress, it was before we worked on her feel. After we worked on her feel, the Rapture album was recorded, and Anita Baker became an acclaimed superstar. Listen to these two albums. The Songstress album is good. Rapture is incredible as it literally sends chills thru your body.)
