How to Quickly Reach Your Singing Goals

... Have you dreamed of learning to sing better, to develop your voice, to develop your range, to have a career as a vocalist or artist?

... Are you currently an artist wanting to sing better, to develop your voice, feel and emotional expression, to increase your vocal range and to feel more confident with your audience?

If you are looking for a way to reach your dreams, you may be looking for:

  • The cheapest way to learn and practice from online videos, apps, or audio programs: Truth is: The cheapest way (and the only recommended way) is to find an inexpensive voice coach or voice teacher.

  • Programs made by voice teachers who have celebrity clientele: Truth is: These will lead you down a path that takes your money and causes problems with your voice and vocal technique due to lack of feedback.

  • Singing classes with many students to save money: Truth is: All singers are blind since they cannot see their vocal instrument and all vocal instruments are different requiring unique training, nurturing and care; this cannot be achieved in a class room setting since one-on-one training is required for every voice.

  • A singing friend and/or your favorite records to sing along with in order to learn to sing: Truth is: Your friend may be able to sing, however does not have the skills necessary to teach you technique and feel. If you just sing along with records, you’ll have no idea of your progress. By doing this long term, you may be building bad habits and get off course. (However, there is value in learning feel and phrasing from today’s artists.)

  • A school or college, such as Berklee School of Music’s vocal program. (May be you’re already at one.) It might feel logical to study voice there: Truth is: You will be trained by a musical theater, or classical instructor. Theater and classical technique and styles do not translate to recording and live performances with sound reinforcement (pop styles/blues styles/country styles, etc.). Unless musical theater, or classical style is your goal, you will not reach your goals studying at these schools.

  • A group to join in order to start to learn singing: Truth is: By singing with other singers or bands, you won’t know if you are achieving your singing goals. (This is the path taken by many singers.)

  • A choir to join in order to learn to sing from the director: Truth is: A director will provide the choir singers with standard teaching comments that may not apply to an individual (you). I recommend southern Baptist church choirs (gospel choirs), as the choir members learn to ‘sing from feel’ (a key component of today’s successful artists.)

  • A location or equipment in order to sing along with Karaoke or ‘beats’ to write songs and sing, or to fast track with TV competitions: Truth is: You can feel like a star, however, this is not how stars learn to sing for the most part. Most stars have grown thru one-on-one mentoring from a vocal coach, voice teacher, or having had singing lessons. It is rare when someone by passes having a mentor and succeeds with their dreams and goals. What is written in fan magazines or shown on TV competitions (like The Voice/ American Idol) does not represent the ‘real recording industry’.

Straight Talk – Quickly Reaching Your Singing Goals::

You are receiving the knowledge and experience of 45 years in the recording industry. Why am I passing this along to you?

  1. Love and respect: out of love for artists that fill our souls with emotion in sharing their singing stories and respect for the wonderful knowledge that I have learned from the A-list of the music industry;

  2. Mentoring in the industry: because I believe in helping those who love music achieve their music goals (whatever they may be);

  3. DIY experience: I myself tried the do-it-yourself road and ventured (and struggled) down this path (without mentoring) by singing with records and my bands; believing that by ‘singing with my band’ that I would improve my abilities, which was not true until I sought out a mentors in desperation;

  4. Inaccurate Advice: then, the expense involved with do-it-yourself programs/ packages/ software/ apps/ cd’s/ books, etc. (even though sold by celebrity teachers), which may make you feel that finally you are on your way to achieving your dreams and goals; but then later… after time has passed using this means… you discover that you have ended up in the ‘weeds’ with bad habits and ill spent money (not much more). The internet, like late night sales programs, has created thousands of fake ways of training you in order to make money off of your inexperience. I have talked with voice teachers about the lack of one-on-one training and they agree it is a key component to success and necessary. When I ask them why they make programs for singing lessons; their rationale is that most students can’t afford private lessons with them (charging high rates). However, their online, DVD’s, compact disks (cd’s), books on how to sing or links to their programs are less expensive and affordable.

Another Perspective and Approach:

The approach I advocate is to:

  1. Focus on your objective and goals.

  2. Find a day/night job or part-time job to support the expense of your goals, and music career life style (that you can’t live without).

  3. Find a mentor for one-on-one singing lessons and training (or voice/vocal coach) that will teach the mechanics of singing.

  4. Don’t waste time and money on DIY stuff and save your money for a private mentor.

  5. Practice daily and get out there and gig to gain experience, and build confidence in using what your mentor is giving you.

  6. Build a fan base by performing live, giving fans your Facebook page and sending out Facebook notifications on gigs, and communicating with your fans.

  7. Don’t let anyone sidetrack you from your dreams.

Singers, who have really practiced with any of the DIY programs, have had some of the strangest bad habits that I’ve ever heard. Then, if they want to succeed they have to break these bad habits and start over. The problem with the schools is similar. They cannot give you the training that fits your unique voice and goals.

None of these DIY teachers/coaches (without one-on-one mentoring included in the package) can help you with the most important part of singing, which is: organic and honest singing from your heart and soul.

...........................................................................................................................

I don’t sell DIY programs because I do not believe in these as a means for reaching your singing goals (and dreams). I recommend to all who want to reach your singing goals and dreams (as a life style and career) to find a private one-on-one mentor that works for you as far as cost and location.
